Hello, my name is Josh McDonald, a Seattle based UI Designer & Front End Developer – creator of Developers Toolbox™. I first thought of creating this site to offer a place for people to store their most-used code. As we move forward in web development, we are often taught to re-use code whenever possible, and for me, it was quite an annoyance to dig thru my code of previous projects to find things I know I’ve coded before. Even after using Github’s Gists, I was still frustrated that I was unable to actually name and sort these bits of codes. I love Github and use it on a daily basis, but for archiving small bits of code, it’s not the best solution. I then tried turning to some other dedicated snippet sites, and was repulsed by the design and complexity of the different user interfaces. Two sites I found I really enjoyed using and found quite helpful, but they only included snippets for the WordPress Platform. I recommend you check out those two sites: WP-Snippets and WPSnipp.

My goal with Developers Toolbox is to remedy some of these problems and frustrations by providing a clean, simple to use system for archiving code snippets. This code snippet repository will be user curated and open to all whom feel like signing up for an account. Even without an account, people can still use Developers Toolbox to browse through snippets, but will not be able to post to the site. It is also my hope that people will be able to experiment with and learn from code posted by other users. To start things off, I plan to keep things fairly focused on Front End Development by only allowing a handful of languages to be be posted to the site. You can expect more languages to be added to the site in the future, but we’ll be starting off with the following; HTML, CSS, Javascript / jQuery, WordPress and PHP.

I am a self-taught web developer, and believe that anyone who has a passion for the web and a little dedication can reach extraordinary heights in the web community. One of my biggest passions moving forward in my web developing career, is to help the beginners in the community have a great resource for learning. As we all know, the web is one of the fastest moving industries when it comes to new technologies and best practices. When I was first getting starting, I had a really hard time finding a place to start. I knew I wanted to construct web pages from start to finish, but I had no clue on where to start. I felt the community didn’t have a good place to go for unexperienced beginners like myself who are just starting out. Things have gotten a little better since then, with resources like Treehouse, Codecademy, and a handful of others, and I also hope to be a resource that will attribute to learning of beginners and more advanced members of the community through tutorials and experimentation with code.
